Been playing this game since I was a wee one. Loved it then, love it now. One criticism about this and other Dragon Quest games via app store is I wish there was the ability to transfer saves between android devices. They did well with the Chrono Trigger setup. Also, Offline play would be a plus. Keep up the good work!

Absolutely worth the 3 dollers best impulse buy ive ever went with its LEAPS and bounds above the Dragon warriors version on NES and you can play the whole thing with 1 hand and the menus are speedy. If crave a visit to the ROOTS of all Jrpgs on the home console this is the best way to just JUMP in the quick save feature + the portability make this one a STEAL

Not bad when on sale

Had to play this since I bought the I & II HD remake on Steam and I’m loving it. They definitely added some QOL to the remake. This was a bit of a linear let down and a short one at that. I’m glad my first dive into RPGs as a kid was the original Final Fantasy on my own NES. This was good, fun, but too short.

A very good port/remake of the original dragon quest. no my only complains I have that it very grindy and I wish there was more locations to explore but yet again this is from a game in 1980 so I wasn't expecting much. and I understand you can't change too much with a game like this. but still The game is amazing for phones and in build for it considering the fact you can play this in portrait mode. and the orchestrated music is a big help especially with the grinding. Save and Sync Issues

The gameplay is great, if it was intended to mimic the NES original, which I played many times as a kid. My two big problems with the game are as follows: (1) You cannot sync to your other Apple devices - I played for a couple of days on my phone, loved it, and wanted to play on a bigger screen using my iPad, but the saved game does not sync to iCloud or Game Center. I would have to start it over again. (2) Quick Save, a save feature under the Misc menu, does not work. I played for hours, retuned to it the next day, and that progress was gone. It would seem I have to return to the King every time I need to save, which is impractical.

I played a few dragon quest games on the Nintendo DS and absolutely loved them, so was pleased to see I could play the earlier games when I'm out of the house (play Xbox at home). I like this game, reminds me of the original Dragon Warrior for NES. The controls are kind of terrible, but it's a good game overall. There's just one really annoying little glitch (Pixel phone) where if I close the game and then open it again the edges are chopped off. It's not just squeezed, like it actually chops off the first and last few letters at the sides of the text boxes. If I stop playing it and come back to it the next day it seems fine again, but really wish they would fix that.

I feel this is a refreshing game for ones who find party management overwhelming, since this game has you go solo for the game's whole runtime. A HUGE glaring issue is definitely the graphics though. The spritework has that badly scaled feel (Like squishing and expanding an image in ms paint), and the colors looks very ugly. Also I have no idea why the battle backgrounds are blown up blurry low res images, instead of just having it have clear pixels. It really doesn't make a good impression.

This is my favorite DQ game. Nobody will agree with me, but I absolutely LOVE being able to journey through an entire RPG quest with a solo hero. I tried playing other DQ games, along with other RPGs, but they all make you fight multiple guys at the same time. Either that, or you're expected to HEAVILY micromanage a tiny little team where each party member dies in one shot. This game does everything right. 10/10 game.

nostalgia trip! I saw this on the app store and was gripped with indecision over if I should buy it or not. but then I remembered a young princess once said to me, "but thou must!" and who am I to deny princess Gwaelin? The remake is pretty, but just like the original, it's a short game. I'm not a fan of the clunky controls, or no return except to the castle, but I guess they wanted to keep those canon annoyances intact. at least they added quick-save. little QoL things would be great.

Fun

I only knew this game as Dragon Warrior on NES before this. It’s fun, and there’s only one thing I looked up about it out of impatience. (These old games sometimes have small, important details that are very easy to miss.) Like a lot of classic RPGs, this game ends up being very short once you figure out what you’re doing. I probably could’ve done without the king lecturing me every time I got killed, but that’s a small detail.

Excellent Way to Experience A True Classic

This port offers an exceptional experience for one of the most important RPGs of all time. I was skeptical about the dedicated portrait mode, but it turned out to be a very natural way to play the game. Great Game, Slightly Buggy Port

I was in a mood to play a classic RPG and was looking for something cheap to play on my phone. I originally was going to get ffvi but it was way more expensive than I wanted to pay at the time so I picked up this since it also had better reviews. The game itself is amazing and has aged slightly well. All these reviews saying it is great in a weird way kind of sum it up perfectly. It’s such an old game, and old RPG’s are known to be a slog to get through but dragon quest paces itself well. You do have to grind, but if you know what you’re doing it doesn’t take that long, and you will probably need a guide, but after talking to townspeople and examining the world you’ll find a lot of things naturally. The game is a classic and was built to cater to everyone in a fun way and that shows here. The port itself is also very good. I think it’s a port of a remake so when I looked stuff up I had to say “Dragon Quest 1 SFC” or something. But it updates all the art without making many map changes to the world. It also simplifies the original UI so instead of hitting the open door button from your list of commands you just hit select. It also makes hidden items more obvious so you don’t have to go bit by bit looking for the mark or a staircase. The only thing that I didn’t like with this port was that the audio was buggy. It wouldn’t let me play background YouTube vids which is ok. The music is fantastic (which I should’ve brought up earlier) but the audio itself would cut out sometimes and eventually just didn’t work for the last stretch of the journey which made events like playing the fairy flute kind of awkward as I had to just sit there waiting for the game to move on. I also have seen people point out that you can’t use controller or really pop it up to your tv. This port is made for your phone and for you to play with one hand. So it you plug it into your tv you might just get a vertical image with the moving buttons still plasters on your 4K tv. Just to keep that in mind, but double check. They could’ve patched it recently. But overall, if you are curious or just want to get ready for DQIII remake that comes out in November (this, II, and III are considered a trilogy) definelty try checking it out!

Land tiles are ugly as sin

This is a wonderful game and is very well suited to a mobile phone port. It also has an awful graphical bug that I can't believe they haven't addressed in, according to other reviews, at least eight years! While the pixel art of the characters and monsters is sharp and neat, the land tiles covering the majority of the screen alternate between thick and thin rows and columns of pixels. Instead of a charming fantasy landscape, the result is a godawful mess. You have to will yourself to ignore this problem for the entire game. You don't get to enjoy the art, especially during a certain moment when the tiles have changed. They have tried to disguise this problem in the store screenshots by shrinking and rotating the images, but you can see what I mean if you look closely. Developers: A sampler must never use a nearest-neighbor magnification filter unless every texture pixel will map to a whole number of framebuffer pixels. With a given level of zoom expected for gameplay, combined with unpredictable phone resolutions for future devices, you've set yourselves up to fail. This betrays the care given by your artists, who clearly wished to uphold the original game's charm. Since the character sprites do look correct, you can look to that implementation for a solution. Stakeholders: This is a modern player's introduction to the Dragon Quest series. Don't be cheap; make a better impression.

I LOVE DQ

I love the dragon quest series and everything about it (except for some games like DQ2 and DQ Heroes 1), so seeing that you can play the older games on mobile is amazing! I understand how at first the games can feel a bit bad at first, but the newer ones are amazing! As a Long-standing DQ fan (I've been playing DQ games for half my life), I feel so much nostalgia going back to the first games, and the Akira Toriyama's art style is so charming to me! All in all, this game is definitely worth the price, you should get it! (DQ Builders 1 & 2 are also amazing games and are definitely worth $60)

Bought this hoping to get that nostalgic feeling of the controller in hand, engrossed in a world on my iPad. Mandela effect?

Am I living in another universe or something? I played this when it was called dragon warrior monsters. And I distinctly remember being able to take on monsters as companions, and breed them for stronger and different monsters. Also, the entire storyline is different. And yet it is the exact same monsters called the exact same names, and thus close enough for copyright. I don’t understand. This is not the first game at all.

This is The Classic, re-imagined for the modern world. Yes, they added a Quick Save system, and Yes, your hero is stronger than the original, but I imagine many players these days would be far less happy if they had maintained the original difficulty. I highly recommend following this up with DQ2, as it picks up very nicely where this one left off, and they both (beautifully) pave the way for DQ3!

This is a fun throwback to my middle school years

I was excited to find this port for iOS. “Dragon Warrior” (as it was called on the NES) was one of my favorite games back in the day and I was excited to find this port! The gameplay is good to great on my iPhone 14, but why can I not get any sound on my iPad Pro (3rd Gen)? That is the only thing keeping me from giving this 4 or 5 stars. I don’t know how much Square Enix still supports this port, but it is disappointing compared to their FF1 and FF2 ports for iPad: those were spectacular.

Weird you can’t turn your phone

Why am I forced to play it upright only i have a case that holds like a gaming controller holding upright hurts my hands I’m so disappointed that I just wasted 2.99$ plus tax to be forced to play a game in a physically painful format on either my palm or pinky finger depending on how I hold my phone I give it one star for the fact I can play it on mobile which is good and it isn’t unreasonably priced -4 stars because there was no thought in mind for the users preferred format I.e turning the phone to its side to have more comfortable hand positions

Extremely dumbed down from original

Too easy. Fly through early levels without even taking a single hp of damage. Monsters drop way too much gold to leave even the slightest hint of a challenge. And the dungeon maps are not the same as the original. No challenge at all to this version, not even worth the time.
