I loved this game & it's clever and fun and technically not pay to win...but it became pay to play properly recently. Unfortunately the devs became greedy & introduced new ideas which made it hard to keep up in leaderboards without paying $$ every month. The gatekeeping of essential resources to further improve your heros became a real bugbear of mine. Even paying $20-30/month would not necessarily guarantee you got what you needed to advance even one of the dozens of heros. I ended up quitting

EDIT: Progress just kind of stops. Levels get too tough to complete and you get 90% of resources for improvement from completing levels. So, definitely pay-to-win. Generally a good game, playing is lots of fun. The controls for mobile are quite awkward and often don't respond the way you expect or want them to, the short timer makes this worse. Fun tactical battle game with slide and flip puzzle mechanics and a core system that is pretty easy to understand so that you can predict outcomes effectively. Most activities are PVE solo or coop, which I enjoy. The PVP arena is ridiculous and leaves a whole lot to chance rather than tactics. For about six months I played with minimal, rare-occasion spending but my growth is pretty much hitting a pay wall and my battles are mostly either tedious or punishing so my play is falling off.

Recent updates have changed nothing. This game is designed to do one thing. Make you spend ridiculous amounts of money to get the latest and greatest heroes that will give you a small chance at completing their latest event. Which, also hide the best rewards behind a pay wall. By the time you are done this game can easily bleed you $50 to $100 a month and that's before event spending trying to get new heroes. The only thing that saves this game is a good guild and those are frequently full.

Not as friendly for free users (first week I spent like 6€, that's it). Played for 4 months every day, completed every quest I could, lots of grinding and still only had been lucky twice to pull 2 exclusive heroes. And I was kinda ok with that, saving resources to get the 3rd asap. Today they "rebalance" the game and one of them gets his bonus down to a regular hero, despite being rare. Trying your best to get the 3rd and all of a sudden you're back to one. It's really discouraging...

The tactical aspects of it are very nice, but be prepared to play for at least a year to get into the juicy decent stuff. This game was fun. I enjoyed the strategy aspect of it. But they made a lot of changes that affected the gameplay and the enjoyment. Worst of which is that they increased the prices of their in app purchases in countries including my own. I know some countries saw an increase of 5x. Hard to recommend.

The best game of the genre I've ever played BY FAR. Awesome character art and insane variety, easy to learn and very difficult to master, very F2P friendly although if you want to be #1 you most likely have to spend. The core game excellent. As you progress through the game, it requires you to have certain heroes for certain challenges. There's where friends comes in. It's expensive because it requires you to constantly get new heroes and they keep creating new challenges (problems) and offering you the solution (new heroes). I can still tolerate this part. The part I hated is the Temple pulls. Pulling the pet without the hero is really a disaster. It's like baiting you and they refuse to fix that part.

Love the game, but if you join late, you can never reach the top

I love the game and have been a paying player for months. However, if you join the game later, you can NEVER reach the top or close to the top by game design. How you level up is dependent on time and cannot be expedited. It’s still a fun game, but would really like to see a path to reach the top instead of trailing behind in eternity. It discourages late comers.

Honestly game is fun

I go through games like crazy, I usually play them for a week and get bored. F&D has kept my attention for over a year. It plays a lot like Terra battle, but more use friendly. I highly recommend it. RPG Gem

This game is unique. If D&D had a baby with chess it would be this game. The mechanics take a little bit to get use to but it is really fun and challenging too. Like all mobile RPG games you have to grind a bit to level up and get better heroes but it’s fun along the way. Enjoy this gem of a game.

Game crashes too much

Using a not too old iPad, from 2021. Other games handle on this iPad is fine, but this game constantly crashes every 20secs. It didn’t crash doing the first chapter but now it crashes so much I can’t even enjoy one full game without it crashes. It’s a good game until chapter 28

I’ve played for a probably a year now and spent hundreds of dollars, it was a great game but now I’m feeling pretty burned by the developers. There is a HUGE level spike at the end of level 28 that’s pretty much impossible without paying out probably several hundreds more. The boss there will silence your whole group every single turn and you can basically do nothing…. Pretty sad because it is a great game but greed always wins I guess…

Developers are making the game worse

They keep adding “features” that make the game worse. It used to be that you could predict how the team would fight with math. Now they added critical attacks for all heroes and monsters and it’s not fun anymore. Your heroes can die even if you plan things right. This is not the game I decided to like. Be Flexible

I have been playing the game for two months now and it’s interesting. The challenge of making the best possible move in the allotted time is unique. The differing skills across the heroes adds to the challenge since you get to select which heroes to bring to each fight. I will say that the devs are living up to their goal of being very friendly to f2p players. The drawback to this, or perhaps it is because the is still expanding, is that features are constantly changing without warning. So if you’re f2p it should only affect your time and you can adjust to all of the changes as you go. If you spend, be aware that you will quite possibly not receive entirely what was expected. Update March2023: Still playing but I often wonder why. Regular changes and updates might seem like a good idea, indicating an engaged develop staff, but they rarely implement smoothly. If you play, be ready to encounter a steady stream of maintenance breaks and times where the game is just unplayable.

Keep it simple

I’m going to keep this simple. It WOULD be a 5 star game and I don’t hand out 5 stars in reviews ever if it weren’t for 1 thing. This arena is the most stupid function of a video game I have ever played in my 45 years of playing video games. Long tutorial forces you to spend your resources

The game is fine, fun even. But I uninstalled after it forces you to spend your first 300 gems on getting a hero, when it’s cheaper to save for a 10 hero summon. I was already peeved when it forces you to spend resources to level up a hero I didn’t want to, but then setting me back 300 gems on a dinky summon wasn’t going to cut it for me.

TLDR: Game mechanics are awful Free to play, but must pay to advance/enjoy The long version: After playing for a month, I decided to quit this awful game. This decision is based on two big deficiencies: terrible balance and the stupid movement timer. The timer is bad enough (way too short to be able to make any constructive or helpful moves leading to death of the heroes), but when coupled with the game balance issues, it just makes for a terrible game. It seems the game is balanced for a party of 4* and 5* toons. However, in the month I’ve been playing I have not been able to get a single 5* character. Because of this, I have been stagnant in the game for over two weeks now. I am only able to level every couple days (which is as fast as the daily quests allow) because with a party of 4* heroes I’m not usually able to even beat on-level enemies. So, I have to level, play one campaign board and wait until I can level again to play the next one and so on. I can’t get any forward momentum in the campaign because of this. It’s a terrible catch 22. I can’t get anywhere without 5* toons, but I can’t get any 5* toons … unless I’m willing to pay for them… So it’s free to play, but pay to enjoy. *wink wink* I’ve been stuck in one chapter of the campaign for 3 weeks, which has caused me to become very frustrated and if I can’t enjoy the game, then I do not need to play.

They have some serious glitches they need to fix. I know they said they are working on it but I was at the top of the dragon-spire for 3 days waiting for my reward to see if anyone had beat me. Four hours left on the clock, and I go to sleep. I wake up and the challenge went to the next level. No reward. I was still top of the board. 👎🏻 That and the pay to win prices are kind of steep... $70.00 for bunch of cool things...? Okay but I wouldn't pay that much for a brand new PS5 game...
