Great but issues.

It’s a great game! But there are a couple of bugs. I tried to do online play and play with one of my friends, but it kept crashing. I also can’t figure out how to make an online account to get an achievement. That brings us to the next topic: achievements. There are a couple of easy ones, but one of them is literally to be the best player in the world. WHY?! Other than that’s the bots almost always just go the spot in front of you. Also what’s the puppet for on pass and play. There’s always just a puppet and a player has to move him and that means there’s always an extra player. Other than that, it’s amazing.

Can’t play online

Update: Even after the patch, the game is still unplayable! After arriving at the first inn checkpoint and finishing the meal, players get locked out. | Bought the game to play online with someone but there is a bug that makes it so that when both players have joined, it becomes two concurrent games that play at the same time. Makes it unplayable.

Bugs: Player Count

Just bought the game and was excited to try and learn before purchasing the physical game. Unfortunately, I’ve run into some bugs at various player counts. Solo seems fine. Pass and play 2-player also seems fine. 3-player with 1 AI generates a 4-player game with 4-player game with 1 AI. 4-player with 2 AI doesn’t load at all. 5-player with 3 AI doesn’t load at all. Didn’t test all player counts. Just wanted to get something with AI instead of the neutral player to teach my wife the ropes.

Font Issue

The stylized font for Japanese looks great, but the developer should not have used it for Chinese. This is because Kanji does not cover all Chinese characters. When you use a Japanese font for Chinese, many Chinese characters do not even exist in such a font, so they have to fallback to the default font provided by the OS, resulting in a really messy GUI.

Great adaptation

Loved the board game but it isn’t always easy to get three people to play. So it’s nice to be able to play solo. Only problem seems to a bug where I choose a meal at the last inn and it doesn’t give me the points. Doesn’t happen every time and it’s not limited to one character but it happens frequently enough to notice. Other than it’s a great adaptation both in game play and visual design.

Beautiful Classic! Can’t wait for expansions

A beautiful, relaxing game which has had any earlier issues fixed by the developers. Take a vacation along the coast, with wonderfully animated characters and locations. Now we’re waiting on the wonderful Crossroads and Matsuri expansions. Crossroads turns every location into a choice, turning a game of hopscotch into a piece of real strategy, as you can now choose legendary souvenirs, end of game bonuses, one off powers, a risky round of gambling, and more. Matsuri adds many new characters and adds an event at each step of the journey which affects the game, greatly improving variation and replayability. And maybe even… promos and the New Encounters? 🤞 Even without these, my girlfriend and I love playing this game. Once they’re here, it’ll take over many dinners and game nights each week. Can’t wait!

No sound/ music

Good game, haven’t played the actual board game before but was easy to learn and play with a 10-year old. But neither of us gets any sound/ music. In settings we’ve tried everything from toggling music/ volume/ language to no use. We’ve tried downloading in multiple devices - phones/ iPads.. all have the same issue. Is anyone else seeing that or are we doing something completely stupid? Looks like an easy one to fix if it’s a bug!

Good overall, but HUGE Bug with Chubei

There is a bug with Chubei. Played a game online with a friend. In the end, there was a discrepancy in the scoring between my game and my friend’s game. He was playing Chubei - he had an extra 5 points that was not reflected on my game. When looking into the details, I saw that his game showed 2 additional panorama sections that he received from encounters which was not apparent on my game. For some reason, the panoramas from encounters are not registering.

Great game but error with Chubei

I love this game and it’s beautifully made. One major bug that hasn’t been fixed in the half year I’ve owned it is when you play the character Chubei. Chubei gains an extra visit each time he eats a meal at an inn. If you receive the mountain panorama, for example, but have already completed it - you will be given a choice of a different panorama. However, after you choose you can’t proceed with the game and are frozen. Please correct this! Second, certain characters you know they will skip coins etc. So easy to defeat them because you know they will skip. If AI were improved to make them still get coins when low that might make it more interesting because pretty easy to win. Otherwise love it so 4 stars. Please fix Chubei bug!

Incredible but incomplete

The game is fun, gorgeous, and captivating, but the achievements don’t work! I’ve completed the the preliminary achievements but they don’t update as completed. Also, the touch screen is very sensitive with no way to modify it. Still, a fun and beautiful experience.

Relaxing, beautiful challenge

What a beautiful game. I only play solo, so I can’t speak to online issues. But this app is flawless in solo play. Others have mentioned the tutorial being minimal, but I thought it sufficed and was well done. It gives you what you need to get started. Rules and strategy are easily available online if you need them, but this game is meant to be an exploration, it’s about the journey. The pace is relaxing, but there is still a strategy and challenge to it. It’s not overly hard nor too easy. It’s simply a relaxing, fun game. I’m glad that when you start a new solo game, you can click in settings for that game and set it to fast AI. That’s great for when you don’t have as much time. But the regular speed is perfect for a relaxing game. Thank you for a good game at a good price with no ads or IAP. It’s also good on battery life. I’m very happy to own this game!

Unplayable

I loved the boardGame and I was so excited to find this app. However it is too buggy to finish a game. It took my friend and I an hour to figure out how to friend each other and start a game. Afterwards, we tried two games and both times the ai crashed. Would have liked it to at least be playable considering I paid money...

Full of glitches

I would give this game a lower star if I could. It deserves negative stars. If I buy a game, I want the game to actually work. It does not work more than half the time. THe developer also never bothered to fix the game. Please do yourself a favor and don’t buy it. Don’t let the devs make any more money off of this game that they will not fix.

Pretty but broken

Offline solo play against AI opponents works fine. On-line play is completely non-functional. Been trying to join a public on-line game or host one, for weeks, but it NEVER works. So sad the multiplayer is so broken..

Great game except for Online play

The app version of Tokaido is just what you would expect - an enjoyable and beautiful game. However, as much fun as the game is to play, online games are constantly plagued with issues such as giving your actions to one of the other players. I just played a game where my character received a bonus for stopping at an encounter space, I neither got the bonus point and coin, nor received the three coins from the encounter. They all went to the player who ended up winning the game, as they used my coins at the temple to tie me for most donations. Things like this happen every game. Yesterday I bought two items from the market at one stop and they were both given to one of the other players. Sometimes meals from the inn are purchased and go to one of the other players, so there go 6 points down the drain. I’ve been playing the board game version of Tokaido for years, and until the online issues are fixed, that is the best option for a fair game (or Boardgamearena.com).

You Get What You Pay For

... And this app was free. Beautiful concept, poor execution. The have has a variety of issues. In addition to the game freezing and not being able to get back in, there are all kinds of things that mess with the game when playing online. Some include * Donations to the Temple not being credited, or being credited to another player. * Items purchased at the market not being received, but takes the coins. * Food at the Inn that was purchased doesn’t show in players collection, or goes to another player. * Stopping at the farm and not getting the coins. * Two players with the same character. On top of those, finding friends and playing with them doesn’t work. It could not locate players by their nickname and we were only able to connect when both in the waiting room. Finally, you can’t do anything else on your device while playing. If you go out of the app for any reason, or even get a phone call, you cannot reconnect to your game.

Great offline, play with friends doesn’t work

I’ve played this game a lot offline as solo and “pass and play” which works great. But we tried playing online with friends, and it doesn’t work. There’s an option to “add friends”, but then you can’t create a private room or do anything with them. Not sure why it has space to add friends if it does nothing. If you create a room, it doesn’t show up reliably, and it allows anyone in. I had to cancel rooms with strangers, and I felt bad about that. My husband sitting next to me could see rooms I created and vice versa.

Please fix this game

The game is pretty and they really did a nice job recreating the board game but the online play doesn’t work at all. More than half the time you get booted or the game crashes sometimes if you’re really lucky you can actually play through with others. Really disappointed the online play isn’t more stable.

Solo works fine... Online is garbage.

Bought to play with family and friends during the Covid Quarantine, and it never works. Can not get through a full game without the game crashing. Plus playing online is incredibly difficult to set up and clunky. Fix the online garbage and I’ll change my rating.

Simple and beautiful but without the expansions, it gets boring quickly

This game has been out a long time now without any additional expansions. It’s a lovely game and a pretty good adaptation of the board game. But without the Crossroads and Matsuri expansions, it gets boring pretty quickly. When will we see them?

Pretty but so glitchy

It’s such a pretty game and I really enjoy it, but it has so many technical problems. Really hope they can release some updates to fix things. I haven’t been able to finish a game yet because the app will randomly force quit and it does not give you an option to go back to your game. You have to start all over. I tried to play with a friend online but we eventually game up because it would make us login over and over, say it didn’t recognize our passwords, start to connect and not finish, etc. I enjoy the game, wish everything would work so I could really play.

Amazing!

I love tabletop games and have always wanted to try Tokaido after seeing it on Tabletop with Wil Wheaton. This game is so much fun and such a breath of fresh air in comparison to other games where the object to kill monsters etc to win. A great combination of relaxing and strategic! Officially addicted to Tokaido on my iPad and now I definitely have to buy the boardgame!

Fun but please update for bug fixes!

This game is great when you play offline. EVERY SINGLE TIME I play with friends, it glitches out at the end and skips the achievements. It goes straight to the leaderboard. 8/10 times my friends and I all have different scores and winners on our different phones. This is super annoying and leads to many arguments for the ultra competitive people we are. We still play and love the game, but it would be wonderful if this wasn’t an issue.

What just happened?

The number one goal of a tutorial is to state your goal. I played this twice through and still don't know the objective, how to play or win. At the end there's just a congratulations (apparently I won) with no scoring. The tutorial takes you through like 4 steps then says you're on your own but will help along the way which never happens. Without instructions (yes there are none to refer to) the game is sort of useless. It will only serve those who've played before or own the game. Sorry it's a nice graphical and sound app but as a board game I have no idea what's going on.

Does not work well

My husband and I both downloaded this game because we have the board game and love it. It seems like they focused too much on the aesthetics and not enough on game function. I got a phone call in the middle of our first game and it kicked everyone off and deleted the game. Every time you close the app it logs you out. I haven't been able to log in for hours because the server isn't responding. There is a tutorial but it doesn't really explain how points are scored, so if you hadn't played the board game it would be confusing. I will update my review if these issues get resolved but so far I am very disappointed. One thing they did right is the visuals. It is illustrated beautifully and is one of the prettiest games I've seen on IOS.

Love the game, suffer minor bug

Hey friends! I love the physical and the digital game. Playing with my kids. :) Minor bug showed up last night: character tokens settle on top of each other like a stack so the first player to land on a feature with two spots is hidden by the second’s token. It wasn’t doing that for the first couple weeks I had the game. Thoughts?

Beautiful but buggy

Beautiful game, but the achievements are totally bugged. I keep unlocking achievements that are nowhere near close to being correct - for example, getting the achievement for winning a game when I was in last place, for successfully playing 50 times when I’ve only played twice... I suspect the game currently counts anything the AI does towards achievements as well, since the AI doing things like finishing a panorama causes the achievement to pop. What makes this worse is that the achievements repeat, so I’m basically getting spammed with notifications throughout the whole game as half the AI’s actions trigger some kind of achievement. I see patch notes saying they fixed this problem but it’s certainly not fixed for me. I’d also appreciate if game settings (like fast AI movement) were retained throughout all games.

Cannot add friend

Just downloaded this game so my husband and I can play while at work, since we have the board game and love it. Unfortunately, it is not allowing us to add each other as friends. “Player not found. There is no player with this name on our server.” Message pops up. Please advise on how to add friends.

Restarts if I don't finish in one sitting

If I don't finish a game and come back to it later, I usually have to start over from the beginning. It's frustrating if I get interrupted and want to finish the game later. Other than that, it's fun.

Very fun game

I love this game, however I have question about a particular aspect of the gameplay.With the panoramas, are the only people to score points for completing them the first one who completes it? And if someone has completed a particular panorama, let’s say the mountain one, is there any benefit to you to land on the mountain space and get a piece of the panorama? Or do you get no benefit since it was already completed? Thank you for the great game!

Wow. Just wow

I don’t normally leave reviews or comments but I had never heard of this game and I saw a review of this app on my google feed and decided to read it. I became intrigued after reading about this game and the highly favorable comments by others and I started to look at the board game and I decided to give it a try for only 1.99. I cannot stop playing this game! The rules were a tad bit confusing and even the tutorial doesn’t fully explain everything so I went online and did some slight research on all the different spots you land on and how they work, and it was easy to understand how it all comes together. I only had to play twice to get an understanding of this game and I am blown away. Can’t believe I had never hear of this game earlier. I am strongly considering getting the board game now! My only gripe is: where is the expansion!? I hope they actually release it because it would make this amazing game even better. I seriously cannot stop playing. Once I started I gotta play like 5 games in a row(which take like 13 minutes a piece) but it’s so addicting even when you don’t win, you enjoy having played a round so much that I wanna play again and again! If you are on the fence about it, pick this game up. There are no bug crashes or glitches after only have this game for 2 days but I can’t keep my battery life! Get this now guys

Love the game but there’s a glitch that needs fixing

My wife and two children love playing Tokaido on “pass and play” mode as part of our family game night. The game is great family fun. There’s one issue though with the way turns are generated when you reach a “double” space. What should happen, based on the rules available on line, is that the first (i.e., “bottom”) player gets the next turn. However, what is happening is that the second (“top”) player is getting that next turn... Hope you can update the game to fix that, otherwise this is a 5-star app.

Just noticed a small bug

I had an encounter and received the 3rd piece of the paddy panorama and got the 3 bonus points. Then it said that I had already completed that panorama and offered me a piece of a different one immediately after. Now that I think about it, an AI player may have already finished the paddy panorama but I also got the bonus, although I’m not completely sure if that’s the case. Also, whenever I try multiplayer there are no games available, not sure exactly why though. Other than those two things I’ve been using this app for awhile now and really love the game! Been waiting forever for crossroads though.

Crashes too often

Beautiful game, fun to play, beautifully laid out. The trouble is that I can’t get through a full game without it crashing: sometimes within the first few rounds, sometimes close to the end. But I have yet to finish a game. PLEASE FIX THIS!!! The game is unplayable in its present state. EDIT: I have the new iPad Pro 11inch, model MTXN2LL/A
