Seven tiers, from Regional to World Gateway, 100 to 2,000 passengers. Neglect a big-city airport and it gridlocks — and that ends the run. Upgrade it, or route more traffic through it. Both work. AIRPLANES AGE Flight hours accumulate and maintenance climbs with them. Sell an aircraft before it reaches critical condition, or replace it and absorb the cost. Very rarely, one doesn't come home. THE WORLD PUSHES BACK Ten events interrupt the quiet: fuel spikes and fuel drops, worker strikes, airport inspections, tax audits, mechanical fines, tourism booms, demand surges and government subsidies.
