LiChess is terrific. For zero cost, you get: endless puzzles, rated games, and a great learning section that makes this the best chess app. I must say that the lessons aspect isn't terribly consistent, but then that means it can possibly appeal to a wider spectrum of learners. Again, you can't argue with free. If you play, or are interested in learning, chess this is the best choice.

I am using the app on my android phone. After one or two games analysis, the engine stops working with an exclamation mark (!). The best moves arrows disappear and the evaluation bar stops working. This is really frustrating. I have to restart my phone every time to make the engine work. The old version was much better. The engine always used to work no matter what!! I also have a screenshot but I do not find an option to upload the photo here. I would have given 4 stars to the old version.

Been using Lichess for a while and it's genuinely great. No ads, no paywall, no premium popups — just play. Puzzles are addictive (though pretty difficult, at least for me 😅 I'm an amateur). Post-game analysis actually helps you learn instead of just showing a number. Simple interface, loads fast on mobile. This new app is even better than the old version in many aspects. Thanks to the devs for this. But I have some issues. 1. When I undo a move, I can't redo it. I must play a move after undoing it even if I don't really want to since there's no redo button. 2. If I tap the previous coordinates during a match, it doesn't show me my previous moves. 3. Finally an app that allows more of the site. It still has its problems. Find the settings. This app will drop pieces on squares you didn't touch. There is a delay so you rarely get the full increment. Also, not app specific, lichess does not do enough to eliminate and deter cheaters. Analysis features are not great

The “learn from your mistakes” feature takes nearly a minute to do anything. It’s faster to copy the pgn and import it into chess.com. Plus the analysis is not at all informative. It tells you the right answer without any rationale and without enabling the exploration of lines.

Great start, room for improvement

First of all, as a free chess resource Lichess is amazing. But since this is a review, I need to point out the negatives too. There are so many features that I feel I've only scratched the surface. But what's been uncovered by that scratch is impressive. Since I'm only a casual chess enthusiast I rarely play anyone but mostly use it for studying and the occasional game with the computer to test what I've been learning. The ability to make your own customized studies is so much better than using a physical board -- because it provides a way to organize and review what you've learned while also including variations. But don't expect for it to be easy to learn how to use. For example, it took me quite a while to figure out how to make a variation from the main line of a game, I'm studying and even now I'm not completely sure I'm doing it right. So one of the main problems I see is poor help materials on how to use the site. On the other hand, there is a way to get help via their forum and I really appreciate that. But Lichess is an incredibly powerful software tool with all sorts of hidden features yet a steep learning curve.

The user interface is terrible, it's not user friendly at all, it reads more like a desktop tab than a mobile app, it is nothing compared to the old app. Since I moved over to this version of the app and I can't get a match. I wait for a long time to be paired with someone but nothing happens, on the other app I would be paired almost instantly. So far, not a fan.

Losing on time is not stalling

I got blocked for thirty minutes because I lost a game on time in a blitz game while I was thinking, and Lichess flagged me for stalling. Absolutely ridiculous.

Beautiful

Nicely done version of lichess for iphone. Very grateful to the developers. That said, Puzzle Streak could use a toggle to not automatically advance to the next puzzle (as in the web interface).

New UI is very bad

I can’t really understand why the UI changed… could be one of the worst changes made on any app I’ve seen in the past 10 years. You take a completely intuitive open source app that creates a powerful and easy to navigate user experience, and then you make it like a maze to even play a game, let alone find any other capabilities of the app. Bad mistake, I’ll be moving back to chess.com unfortunately. No easy way to report bugs

There's a bug right now where on iPhone app when trying to send a chat message during game, every single letter typed makes the virtual keyboard disappear... this is insanely time consuming especially in a G/1... no easy way to just send a bug report, they want you to go to their web page or GH... it should be right in the app.

New lichess sucks

Nothing was wrong with the app before , once you opened the app you could select any game you wanted and be queued to random players . Now the mobile Home Screen is on stats and the options aren’t simple .
