About
Discover Patolli, an ancient game of chance, strategy, counting, and competition—reimagined as an interactive educational experience inspired by the peoples of the Aztec world. Patolli was played in Mesoamerica using marked beans, game pieces, and a cross-shaped board. In this digital recreation, players cast five marked tiles, move their pieces around a 48-space track, take advantage of special spaces, capture opponents, and race to move all six pieces off the board. The rules are easy to understand, but every throw creates new risks and opportunities. Play against another person or challenge the computer while exploring the history, achievements, and continuing influence of the Aztec and Nahua peoples. Beyond the game board, the app includes an illustrated cultural book that introduces readers to important aspects of Aztec history and daily life. Topics include: • Patolli and traditional games • The rise of the Mexica and the Aztec Empire • Tenochtitlan and life in a great city • Chinampas, farming, and important foods • Family life and the education of children • Markets, merchants, and long-distance trade • Clothing, jewelry, feathers, and social roles • Codices, writing, calendars, and recordkeeping • Religion, ceremonies, and the cycles of nature • Warriors, rulers, tribute, and political power • Art, architecture, sculpture, and craftsmanship • The survival and continuing influence of Nahua culture Learn how Tenochtitlan grew into one of the largest and most remarkable cities of its time. Explore how farmers cultivated crops on chinampas, merchants carried goods across long distances, artists created extraordinary works in stone and feathers, and families passed knowledge from one generation to the next. After reading, test your understanding with a multiple-choice reading comprehension quiz. Each question reinforces important information about Aztec history, culture, daily life, and the game of Patolli. Optional spoken narration makes the reading and quiz content more accessible to a wider range of learners. Features include: • A playable digital simulation of Patolli • Human-versus-human and human-versus-computer play • Animated casting tiles and moving game pieces • Captures, protected spaces, bonus movement, and exact exits • A choice of player token designs • An illustrated guide to Aztec history and culture • Optional spoken narration for book pages and quiz questions • A reading comprehension quiz with score tracking • Music, sound, and speech controls • An educational experience for students, families, teachers, and lifelong learners The cultures represented in this app did not disappear with the fall of Tenochtitlan. Millions of people continue to speak Nahuatl and preserve traditions, foods, stories, art, farming knowledge, and community practices with deep roots in the Aztec world. Patolli brings together play and discovery in one engaging experience. Race around the board, explore a remarkable civilization, and test what you have learned. Play the game. Explore the culture. Challenge your knowledge.
