This update improves the Shredder Chess experience while keeping the classic features players rely on: adaptive strength, puzzles, coach, Elo rating and game analysis. We have refreshed the interface, improved the overall feel of the app and made Shredder more comfortable to use on current iPhones.
Compatibility fixes: in some circumstances the opening book was not visible and the email form was behaving badly.

There is no chess trainer better than this app. Used it for years. Try it out and you won’t be misled. Thanks for keeping this up and American for as long as you have. God bless, and play chess. SHRED.
- Longhorngent · v1.11.0
The app works well on iPhone 17 series event though the update is a bit dated. Can we have 360 Chess option in our games? That randomised mode is frequently played in FIDE Chess tournaments these days, and I think it will be a good addition inside the app!

Look no further! Shredder Chess is the GOAT
- BuzzMartialArts · v1.11.0
I have had this program for so many years that I have gone through not just on my PC but to iPhone and on my MacBook. I recommend this program 100%
- Henricus · v1.11.0
I love this app, have been using it for years. However, there has been a long standing problem with the way it calculates scores for puzzles. In particular, not all puzzles get included in the scoring. Sometimes you can play a few and the scores never get updated. Or sometimes you solve a few puzzles with the top score, but your average score actually goes down. I usually reset my score after every 100 puzzles, and so it’s not that hard to see whether it’s updating it and if it’s accurate. I’ll be happy to give it 5 stars if this gets fixed.
- sir.ivanhoe · v1.11.0
I have tried every one I could find sand nothing beats this. The puzzles it gives you to solve are great and if you think it is wrong and your solution is better it lets you convert the puzzle to challenge the computer and it's always right.

I believe this is my best purchase on a chess app on IOS. I spent $7.99 in Feb of 2013 for this and after 10 years and many IOS version updates Shredder chess still is my go-to chess app for puzzles, playing, and learning. 1000 puzzles is a lot, and the best thing is I can continue playing against the engine at the position where the puzzle is solved for endgame practice.
- Bprijadi · v1.11.0
This app is defective on many levels eg - declares draws when clearly not the case. There was only the black king on the board with 3 white queens, white rook and White Castle and it declared a stalemate draw - advised me to take back a checkmate move - frequently offers poor suggested moves - doesn’t clearly show when you have been put in check - no explanation on puzzles The list goes on. Don’t waste your money like I did. Get something else
- Trading pundit · v1.11.0
At the beginning of a game, the program works more or less at the preset playing strength. However, during the middle game it often pumps up its rating significantly (validated with Crafty). A player at a moderate 1600 should continue to play at this level until the end and not suddenly play flawlessly. This is particularly annoying during a Blitz chess game.
- Orthoplan · v1.11.0
Can we have in a future update all the games from the chess champions from Murphy to Magnus
- elcriollito · v1.11.0
This is the best substitute I have found for other actual chess players; the difficulty scaling is great and give a good, surmountable challenge.
- War Dinosaur · v1.11.0
Now it’s working to the tea. It got fixed. Bugs - as far as I can see - got cleaned. Thanks.
- SigFrued · v1.11.0
The title says it all- this works well enough; but it’s slow and the puzzle solutions are full of problems. This app was highly recommended to me by two good players, so it’s disappointing to find several mistakes in their puzzle solutions within the first day using the app. I do like the customization of the board and pieces available and the fact that I can review and analyze other games, etc.; but the interface could be improved quite a bit. Overall, it’s decent for an easy way to ply against a bot of customizable difficulty but there are better chess apps out there.

- MyTwitzWorld · v1.11.0
Great app. It would be helpful for reviewing games to be able to copy/paste PGN or even FEN data. Another wish is for more than one best-moves line, though I’m not sure where it could be fit on the screen.
- Chess geek · v1.10.0
There’s no subscription you needed or many different courses. It’s very simple and intuitive chess app. I’m so glad that the developer still doing update work!
- KH12474 · v1.10.0
Any chance of getting an update to support the X and above screens?
- akairush · v1.9.0
This is just a rock solid chess app. The engine is great, there are no silly gimmicks, and the interface is clean with the options you’d expect.
- gnperdue · v1.7.1
How long it’s gonna take them to add new screens support? Another couple of years? Jee
- DeltaActual · v1.7.1
Great chess game I’ve been using for years. Suddenly there’s a bug where after a game the computer says it will increase its rating to the maximum (2600) difficulty, even if I lose. It used to work well and increment based on performance and it was my favorite feature.
- Bosbillk · v1.7.1
UI needs to be updated and needs to be resized. Overall great app. Happy with the purchase 🤗
- MrDewClarke · v1.7.1
Great app, also great on iPad
- Esklyar · v1.7.1
I’m getting sick and tired of this app. I’m a class A player (1800+) and like to play on the app on the rides home. No matter what setting I choose I get demolished at 1800. At the 1700 its too easy. I play live over the board tournaments all the time and rarely (never) do you see 1800 players attack wildly before they even develop. The app gets away with it because it has perfect calculation within a number of plays. If I wanted to play a harder level I would choose 2100+ in the settings. Please calibrate this app. If I wanted to play against a titled caliber player I would not choose the 1800 setting at normal. Other than that the app works fine.

I absolutely LOVE this app! Shredder is by FAR the best chess app I’ve ever used. It’s breathtakingly FAST! Using it in “aggressive mode” is how I like to use it, because it makes every game FUN! Beyond the excitement of each game played that way, I find that taking additional time to study the record of each game solidifies my understanding of what the hell happened 🤔 🤣 A summary of all my experience doing battle with Shredder: among all the best living players I’ve ever gone up against — even the most accommodating, patient, informative, and generous of opponents — none has taught me as much in such an amazingly short time as has Shredder. In aggressive mode, even though I realize it’s thinking far, far ahead and referring to a huge database of games played by grand masters to prepare itself for each potential move (modifying both its strategy and its tactics along the way), it makes each move so ridiculously quickly that I just pretend I’m facing a truly awesome competitor who will still gladly teach me how to weigh the options in any given situation and to think ahead the way he does. It’s wonderful! ♥️ *** I’ve enthusiastically recommended Shredder to every chess lover I’ve ever known, and each of them has wound up doing exactly the same. Pass it on!
- kulsayogi · v1.7.1
Shredder though getting old is still easily the best chess application in the App Store for iPhone or iPad.
- Adrian31088 · v1.7.1
This app is great. The developer has been very helpful, even with minor concerns. It is also accessible to blind people, which is necessary for me. I would recommend this app to anyone.
- Darth Maul 123456789 · v1.7.1
I like the puzzles, the puzzles vary in difficulty level, so I do not find them too easy or too daunting. I keep on getting hints when I make mistake or I use analysis in the end. I would like some analysis for better lines in addition to the evaluation number.
- manmish · v1.7.1
Great!
- T Bless · v1.7.1
Titles as it all: Do I have to pay for the app on every phone???
- eotudor · v1.7.1
I love this app. I review all my over the board games right away and save it. Works perfectly on the iPhone.
- VI3I · v1.7.1
This is a fantastic chess app - probably the best on the App Store. The biggest problem: I'm just really disappointed that you can play only one game at a time. You should be able to play multiple games you can toggle back and forth between. Right now, it's only one game at a time... Which makes it very slow for playing different positions or openings simultaneously. So that makes it a bit annoying to use as a self-teaching app.
- ElegantScience · v1.7.1
Don't waste your time with the puzzle feature, because it's full of mistakes.
- UncleSkunkle · v1.7.1
It is great to see that the Shredder development team has continued to support this application. Such continued efforts are the hallmark of quality on iOS, and serve as the gold standard to all prospective developers. Thanks for a great app. Edit: The latest updates have been halfhearted at best. It would be nice to see the developers give this gem the attention and polish it deserves, as I'd love to increase my rating to 5-stars.
- meta732 · v1.7.1
I have iOS 9,I think it the best chess app you can learn a lot from this app (auto rating, ant puzzle ) but it keeping crashing and crashing all time. Do wast your time and money they never try to fix it very good app but very very poor support.
- pino2003fr · v1.7.0
Crashes all the time
- Stevenh107 · v1.7.0
Exceptional when it works. It is very buggy and crashes. I will change to a 5 star once fixed.
- AdamApple123 · v1.7.0
I love this app. However it has many problems and it really requires an update, is difficulty is not really in ordered of strenght as its rating in 1250 is more challenging than 1450, it would be better if they add a solution to this problen in the later update
- Alidavid22 · v1.7.0
I'm revisiting my previous 5 star rating on this once Amazing app. It's sad to see that it hasn't received a single update since 2014. It's become more buggy over time and now it lacks serious functions and features :( I hope the developer pays enough attention to this. Thank you.
- abedzaza · v1.7.0
I don't know what happened with this app. I used it for years and never had any problems. It was my favorite chess application. Now it crashes after ever other use. I have to continually delete and reinstall to make it work. Not worth the price they charge any more....
- Gtowngent · v1.7.0
Shredder is a great trainer, keep up the good work guys!
- mani_47 · v1.7.0
Shredder is absolutely the best chess app. The fact that Shredder can be set to automatically adjust it's strength after every game makes it the perfect trainer. Puzzles are great challenge too. It could do with a update though ;)
- Choepel · v1.7.0
SIMPLY THE BEST!!!

- Umbrichess99 · v1.7.0
Great app, please update for IOS 9 ASAP as the app now crashes.
- Stefansway · v1.7.0
While using hotspot , board/menu is not displayed properly and it is not playable. Many apps handle hotspot correctly. Been that way a while now. You would expect a better for a paid app. Chess Genius does it correctly.
- Philly Phool · v1.7.0
It quit working recently, so I deleted and reinstalled. That appears to have worked. Good chess app. The best.
- MJM TX · v1.7.0
It simply won't open after a few uses and I have had to delete it and re-install it over and over.
- Brazencross · v1.7.0
