This is a great implementation of a solid board game. However, the app is unplayable because of calculation errors when displaying impacts of a tile to income, population, etc. If this was corrected, the review would be 5 stars, but without it, it’s a 2. I realize this is an old app, but please fix this issue!
- Joshbull33 · v2.1.4
Was a great game but the UI needs to be updated so that the tile draw area at the top is not so large. Sadly, I don't think we will ever see that happen. The game seems to be largely abandoned.
- Tom D · v2.1.3
Can’t even use the iPhone form factor correctly. Wastes 15% of screen. Font impossible to read. Your app is a ripoff.
- Eriptron · v2.0
This game does not even start, neither in my phone nor in my iPad… requesting a refund from Apple
- Lparigi34 · v2.0
Just installed this app and it will not run. Phone returns to the Home Screen when opening app or navigating to its screen within open apps. Tried restarting app, restarting phone, and removing and reinstalling.
- TangledTroubles · v2.0
So far, not good. On my Samsung tablet, the app's Start button is in the Bottom Right of my screen, but it's actually *layered under* the operating system's Home Screen button and Back button... so can't even start the game. Can play Campaign, but it's buggy and crashes with a runtime error after every game. Not good.
- Allan Tyler · v2.1.2
Good game but it should get an app update to correct some bugs and to refresh the UI.
- Francois Landry Corbin · v2.1.2
I got this for $0.99, which really is a steal. This is a great game and an adaptation of a very good board game. The AIs are tough and there’s a learning curve to figure out how scoring and modifiers work, but once you do, this is quite fun. Games take about 20 minutes, and the computer handles all the tricky math for you, but I still do recommend learning how it calculates these anyways, or you’ll never get far. I play on ipad. It makes zooming in easier, and this is important to remind you which tiles use what modifiers, as the text can be small. Placing a surburb tile next to a lake tile is good. Placing suburb next to landfill is bad. But, landfill is great for an economy boost. Part of the fun is learning how to combine your tiles for best effect. The goal conditions can change from game to game, so you can’t just use the same layout designs again and again and expect to succeed! Some tips - early in the game, build up your economic base first, or you will stagnate. Keep reputation healthy; you get +1 population for each rep point per turn, but control your growth! If you allow population to grow too quickly, you won’t have the economy to support them and you will fall behind. I play vs one AI at a time, and a game lasts about 19 turns, so if you cripple your economy, you won’t have time to catch up in time. Anyway, if you like strategic economy games (check out Le Havre too), or you like simcity-like games, Surburbia is a winner!
- Tiff1111125 · v2.0
I'm trying to play on the Fold4. The screen is zoomed in and I can't actually hit the start button the play the game.
- janine viglietti · v2.1.2
The core game feels really good but the UI is archaic
- Marlo Ekberg · v2.0.1
Start button is still broken on galaxy tab a. Really shows the lack of care developers put into this. Cannot even start a game.
- Jeff James · v2.0.1
My app works perfectly! Maybe a recent update fixed the errors. But this game is fantastic, and the campaign mode really brings new challenges. Love it!
- Jared Olinger · v2.0
True to its physical version. Barebone gfx/sfx. No online MP, only AI and Local P&P. UI is clunky, not ideal for cellphones. Tiles in the Market Area are too big and cover half screen, making it difficult to have a clear overview of what's going on. Tutorial is lacking but Rulebook and Tiles Overview are provided. Campaign mode is fun and unlocks expansions. Can switch between Collector's Ed tiles and Classic. To solve the zoom-out bug: tap the Cog icon topleft > Recenter. Good but buy on sale.
- Emilio Collavino · v2.0.1
The preview showing how the tile will affect stats are incorrect. For example, the airport which should only show -1 rep if adjacent to a suburb is showing -1 in every possible spot, despite only one space being adjacent. So disappointing since I love this game.
- Wicked Nin · v2.0
I got this game free with the purchase of the CE Kickstarter boardgame. It has rapidly become one of my favourite games on my phone and lets me play through various strategies before receiving the final product. The only downside I can find is that there are still some AI improvements that need to be done. Like buying a tile that is available for +6 when the same tile is available for +0 and there isn't the goal of least money... Broken now on Sansung Galaxy Tab (2022)
- Ryan Mahood · v2.0.1
Unplayable.... On my Galaxy Z Fold 3, the start and back buttons are located under the game boost buttons, even in tablet mode. Please fix, it was playable on my older Galaxy S10
- Chef Deadpool · v2.0.1
Great Game...but a few suggestions: 1) need a campaign save progress function across different devices. 2) needs a zoom out function to get a COMPLETE VIEW of the played tiles; it is crazy having to drag the screen around so much. This is especially true in Campaign mode as the tiles are spread so widely. (More specifically, the zoom in function works fine, the zoom out function doesn't go far enough in my opinion.)
- Jeff Henderson (HendyMan) · v2.0.1
Good idea, poor execution, I don't even know what to do in this game. Maybe showing some tutorial, hints, or tips could help but well, glad I bought with cutoff price, if I pay full price for this I'd be so mad. But can I have refund for this?
- Claus Siagian
Needs work. Zoomed out and player board glitched and couldn't find main player board to place tiles. Symbols and words on bottom of some tiles very small and difficult to read. Shame, seems like a fun game.
- Joe Black · v2.0.1
Great game. Please add good expansions!
- Daniel Deakin · v2.0.1
Fun time, but UI needs overhaul. The market covers up half (or more) of the screen for 90% of the game, making it impossible to watch other players' moves or get a feel for what your city looks like from a large scale. However, besides that issue the adaptation is lovingly done with great attention to detail.
- Y. · v2.0.1
Great game, poor ui.
- Charlie McCormick · v1.2.1
The UI is clearly meant for a tablet as it is very nearly unplayable on phone (and I mean that literally and without embellishment). Possibly the worst app implementation of a board game that I have encountered.
- Drew Grant · v2.0.1
Very buggy and lacking basic explanation / intuitive gameplay
- James · v2.0.1
This is a good implementation of the game. Hadn't previously noted the drop-down element of the top menu.
- Casey Comisky (JokerES) · v2.0.1
Please add the ability to access a detailed score breakdown explaining how the turn's score was calculated.
- Jim Reis · v2.0
I love the board game that I have in collector edition. I also love the app. I only wish my screen will be bigger to see more of my city I have a favour to ask. I am after a code to get suburbia on ios but I forgot to get it during the campaign (I got the android on but not the iOS). Please come back to me I need this on my iPad !
- Benjamin TALLIER · v2.0
Great port of the boardgame. The automatic calculations are great and the special edition tiles design make it much more interesting visually. The campaign mode is a great addition and will keep you busy for a while.
- Phell7
No online play. AI experience is pretty lonely for this one. Visuals are unremarkable. Also moving the field of view on the map keeps causing it to hang
- J · v2.0

This app was great until they updated the graphics and made it an absolutely overdesigned mess.
- David Kauffman
Lots of features and a robust, satisfying game.
- A Google user · v2.0
No multiplayer which is the whole reason the game is any good?
- Smith2332 · v2.0
Tricky to see on the phone but good city building game.
- A Google user · v2.0
Updated graphics are super cute but I just caught my newly purchased tiles not increasing my income (yellow warehouse +2 for every touching blue business & +5 for blue new car dealership + another +2 for touching yellow warehouse. 🙁. If purchases don’t increase my scores, it’s not so fun.
- Jane Doe in Pacific NW · v2.0
I originally gave it 3 stars because I found the new graphics hard to read, but I found the option to revert to old graphics and all is well.
- Mark S.76 · v2.0
Tile purchases are wrong. Allows you to buy tiles even if you don’t have enough money. If the printed price plus the market price equals more than your coins then you should not be able to buy the tile.
- Zirlburg · v2.0
Won't let me long press to decrease volume. Leave the app for a while and the sounds and music are on. Just let me long press to decrease or increase volume, come on. I should not have to click click click. That's nuts. Why on Earth would you change how volume works? Maybe it's a bug? Fix for 4 stars. It's a fine app otherwise. Glad I can play with classic art, which I vastly prefer.
- A Google user · v2.0
What a terrible app. The "campaign" is garbage with ill-defined rules and arbitrary end game triggers. I keep getting messages I have failed to connect a tole when I clearly have. Hire a better developer next time.
- A Google user · v2.0
Edit: thanks! I'm updating my rating since this toggle does exist
- A Google user · v2.0
Game seems to randomly decide whether or not tiles are connected in campaign mode. I've won games I should have lost and lost games that I should have won. Also, the game play itself is much more a game of luck than strategy. It really depends on who gets access to what tiles and which tiles were actually included in the deck each game. I was hoping for more of a strategy game. Also, navigation and readability leave a lot to be desired.
- A Google user · v2.0
Had installed it on a Pixel 2. Game is playable but until it's updated to hide the on screen Android buttons (back, home, app switcher) then it'll remain uninstalled. Too many times I closed the app when trying to zoom on a tile in the market.
- A Google user · v1.2.4
The new tiles are gorgeous, however, I own an iPad Pro and even on this large 10-inch screen I can’t read the incredibly small writing on the tiles. :/ I’m sure the printed tiles will be easier to read, but unfortunately, the online game is now dead to me. :(
- White--Black · v2.0
Online multiplayer has been removed.
- diffsky · v1.5
Great game and I've enjoyed the app, but after the latest update not only were all of my old saved games lost, but the only game I've saved since the update I could open. I could delete it accidentally trying to open it, but I couldn't actually open it no matter how many times I tapped.
- A Google user · v1.5
The app works well for me. I also enjoy the game play. My only complaint is that the AIs are not very strong opponents.
- Uniq name 3.14 · v1.5
Might not be visually flashy as the kids seem to like in today’s apps. But this really captures the table top game and adds quite a lot of aids so the player doesn’t have to try to precompute their numbers.
- homest1357 · v1.5
A good implication of the board game. Would give it 5 stars if it included all expansions (Inc and 5-Star) and if there was a place in app to report bugs in game. The AI is buying tiles and going into negative money to do so. And Casino isn't working correctly when population goes backwards over a red line.
- A Google user · v1.5
Has a aoftware bug in doing its additions. Cant measure lakes.
- A Google user · v1.5
Very tricky puzzle game
- A Google user · v1.2.5
This is an excellent implementation of the game! I especially like the campaign and its challenging scenarios! Some of the reviews mention having a hard time tracking the math according to the app, but I have checked it extensively and it is always right according to the rules. I like that the app lets me know the consequences of each action I take before I really take it. The game takes a few tries to really understand, but is worth the effort.
- A Google user · v1.2.5
i was hoping it would have a tutorial so could learn the game instead of reading rules
- A Google user
Terrible game,I have myself 10 chances learn and trying to figure out how to play. The instruction is way too little. I wished there is an example or tutorial game. Oh well, uninstalling this game.
- A Google user · v1.2.4
I backed the latest kickstarter and the app was free with backing. The app is terrible. There is no tutorial, that I have found and no online play. I have a game app that I need the real game for so I can learn how to play the app. I have only a few game apps on my phone. I have one puzzle style game the rest are board game apps that I can play online with friends or random people. It's why I got those apps. Why have pass and play when we can bust out the board game when we get it?
- A Google user · v1.2.4
Great app. really enjoying the solo campaign challenges
- A Google user · v1.2.4
This is not a review of the game, but of the app. It is pretty much unplayable in this version. Wait for an update.
- A Google user · v1.2.4
saw the game on sale for free... started it up, read a bit. placed the tile and couldn't do anything after. The controls/layout needs reworked. The game hasn't been updated in 2.5 years...
- A Google user · v1.2.4
Great example to show why you need to invest in UX
- A Google user · v1.2.4
Wonderful immaculate game!
- A Google user
Encountered a bug which caused a win condition from failing to trigger. Pretty annoying. Quite fun, but needs serious QA work before it's worth picking up even for free.
- A Google user · v1.2.4
This looked like an interesting strategy game. Unfortunately the design of this digital version is abysmal. It's slow and the interface is clumsy, but honestly I could look past all that. But then I scrolled too far from the board and now I'm "lost" in a white void! And this is a premium game? Immediately uninstalled.
- A Google user · v1.2.4
Difficult to read on mobile. Instructions not easy to understand. Not fun.
- A Google user · v1.2.4
confusing
- A Google user · v1.2.4
Good game, fine adaptation but annoyingly buggy. Besides the zoom problem, I can't finish Atlanta. Objectives say connect all tiles, which I do, earn more than 10, same, and 30 Max inhabitants, and despite being either above or over, the connect all tiles and under 30 are both a fail every time... So you can't finish the campaign that way.
- A Google user · v1.2.4
glitchy
- A Google user · v1.2.4
Despite disabling sound, the app starts with sound. This is an automatic 2-star max for me, regardless of other app quality.
- Nets10 · v1.2.5
Game runs great on my iPad using iOS 12.1.4 Excellent conversion of the board game. Convenient for playing on the go. Hours and hours of challenging fun!!
- NetSeth · v1.2.5
Please update the game for the iPhone XS Max and other new devices.
- Director_X · v1.2.5
The game is interesting, and the board game is probably fun. The app is poorly implemented. There is no save feature for single player games, and if you forget to go in and save your local game and the app restarts, it is gone. Campaign is only 10 scenarios and way to short to be worth the value of the game, especially considering each scenario is just a variation on the theme. All-in-all, probably about 2 hours of gameplay, and then into the used games folder to never be played again.
- Ckrichter · v1.2.5
It seems that you get reputation reductions for adjacent tiles, even when they are not adjacent. The game isn’t playable if it doesn’t follow the rules.
- MysteryDawn1 · v1.2.5
The bad reviews are all from older versions of this game - the updated version is perfect, and a 5-Star port of this wonderful board game! I love the multiplayer but also the solo challenges!! No bugs, full tutorial and great UI on iOS 11. Thank you to the design team!
- AlaskaDaveAK · v1.2.5
I was scrolling through the AppStore and accidentally clicked on the 6.99 and the purchase part came up where you need your finger print. I clicked on the cancel button then once I was done looking at the featured tab I went back to the home screen then I saw this game up on my home screen. Waste of $7 that I needed.
- jibberjabbercarp · v1.2.5
I am a very long time fan of this game and no it well. I just got the app and I like the app as well. However, after playing two games and being confused about how the app was adding up my income, I decided to double check it. I am very confident that it is not adding up my income correctly. It is hard to tell because you can’t see how many deductions you have from the population board, but I am showing that I should have an income of 26 minus population deductions. My population is 28. The game is showing me with an income of 15. If it isn’t adding up the effects of the tiles correctly then the game is unplayable because you cannot strategically select tiles. I would really appreciate a response, refund, or help in understanding this. Maybe I am missing something, but like I said, I am a long time fan of the board game and know it well. I don’t think I am mistaken.
- wonderjeep · v1.2.5
Nothing is more frustrating than playing out an entire game only to get “Runtime error bad argument #-1 to ‘?’ (String expected, got nil)”. This has ruined two attempts to play now so I’m done.
- Skellt · v1.2.5
Zooming feels buggy on iPhone. Sometimes you lose sight of the tiles and have to quit the game and start a new one.
- BravoAlpha34 · v1.2.5
Suburbia is incredibly addictive and engaging.
- jr wolf girl · v1.2.5
Tried my first solo game, out of income to buy anything, but the game won’t let me proceed until I place a tile, which I can’t afford, and I see no way to tell it “End Turn” or if there, some action that I can do that will let me just pass or take money, it wasn’t well-explained in the tutorial.
- Captain Defenestrator · v1.2.5
If you're playing a campaign you'll have to start over from scratch as you'll never be able to find your tiles again.
- Slipstreamed · v1.2.5
I was all ready to write my three-star review, then I tried the campaign. My first exposure was Castles of Mad King Ludwig (a very similar game by the same designers). I struggled with that one until I downloaded the manual for the physical game - the Ludwig tutorial is a bit choppy and it's hard to find the concrete rules. Playing alone, I went straight to the single player campaign, and it didn't click. Before giving up, I tried multiplayer against the AI, and finally started having a good time. I still enjoy Castles, now that I've figured it out. I brought that understanding into Suburbia, which shares a lot of rules. The tutorial and manual here are much better laid out and much clearer. I had only one point that needed clarity - does a tile score only when you place it, or do the tile bonuses continue to trigger every time you play more tiles next to them (or elsewhere in the city?). Some Googling resolved that one (it's the latter, they continue to trigger), and so once I clearly understood the rules, I could play. The main problem here is the AI, and, indirectly, the size of the goal bonuses. I lost my first game, after winning the board. I got no goal bonuses and the computer trounced me in the final scoring. In the second game, I lost by 1, still figuring out the rules. In my third game I pretty much doubled the computer's score, and continue to do so. It's not that I'm amazing, I think the AI is just too weak. And the fact that you can play a pretty mediocre game, but complete all the goals, and your score just explodes - it is a mundane task to build fewer lakes than the computer. I was ready to chalk up a three-star review due to insufficient AI. Then I tried the campaign, which had fallen so flat in Castles of Mad King Ludwig. But this time it is great! The campaign forces you to actually play the game and push yourself to eke the last bit of efficiency and bonus out of the city you're building - this is what the game is all about. Now the game forces you to think, evolve, and play. It saved the game. Feedback for developers? Make it abundantly clear how and when the tile bonuses trigger, even go so far as to animate where your points are coming from after each play. This is an important but unclear part of the mechanics. And introduce some harder AI opponents that stretch your players - shouldn't be too hard in a game that is pure math (or maybe it is hard to find that medium between too easy and pure calculator?) Feedback for shoppers - get this game and play the single-player campaign, if you want a math-based puzzle of a game that will both interest and challenge you.
- Bleu Whale · v1.2.5
No decent tutorial, no explanation, the interface is plain terrible. If you played the tabletop version you probably can get around these issues, but if you haven't - don't bother.
- FeistyYeti · v1.2.5
The interface is probably a nightmare to learn if you don't know the board game well, but if you do it is excellent and provides a great Suburbia experience. It must have been a complicated game to port to iOS, and they did a great job. Engrossing and fun.
- Tom_Sea · v1.2.5
The user interface on this should be better for a premium app. Worst part is that there's no "find my city" button anywhere: for some reason, it's too easy to tap the screen on some way to lose sight of your tiles, never to be found again (on an iPhone). I've had to quit 3 of 5 games because of this: I don't think I'll try it again.
- Anne on a moose · v1.2.5
But can we get some expansions??
- Ktw102085 · v1.2.5
I like this game a lot but the app needs some work. I'm constantly getting error messages in online multiplayer...the latest being "bad argument #-1 to ?" What the heck does that mean? It's also really confusing to challenge/host my friends. I always end up player random players which is fine but I had hoped it would be simple like in the Carcassonne app. I'll continue to play because I love the game and already purchased it but I hope it will be improved soon.
- BSacamano · v1.2.5
Hi, please let me know if gamecenter 10 will be implemented.
- weimin2012 · v1.2.5
Having just discovered the amazing Suburbia board game, I was so excited to see that there was an app as well. Unfortunately the app has quite a few glitches that makes it verging on unplayable, especially for the multiplayer options. Hopefully they'll be able to sort these issues out so that more people can discover the fun of Suburbia!
- Mollymcmac · v1.2.2
Zoom bug keeps you from doing anything if you accidentally misclick, and there is no way to reload saved games.
- Terrycloth3 · v1.2.2
I can't figure out if it's a bug or just poorly explained but I have no idea how the cost is impacted aside from the tile price and market. I read the rules and walked through the tutorial to no avail.
- SurferDude47 · v1.2.2
One of the tiles said -reputation for adjacent community so I placed it by itself next to a lake. Still subtracted the rep.
- Wynlyndd · v1.2.2
No LOCAL NETWORK/bluetooth play, the game forces Game Center which is utter failure, unreliable, slow. The game does not allow you to view your city or opponent city (as you would in real boardgame session) while waiting for opponent turn. Imagine playing chess where ipad hides board while you wait for opponent? Has author ever played Suburbia boardgame with real people? Game Center loses sync and requires constant manual resyncing. Tiles are not readable on older non-retina devices. Let other developers pick up good titles like Suburbia, dont kill it with crummy releases like this one.
- Ignacj · v1.2.2
The game design is great. Campaign and single player games are both nice options. The calculation of population from extra cash at the end of the game was a little confusing (more complete directions would help for those who haven't played the real game), but overall it's great!
- Sabrina5 · v1.2.2
Riddled with bugs. Tiles disappear, people cannot join your game sometimes, doesn't tell you when it's your turn. Great board game, very poor ipad game due to bugs that have not been fixed since I bought it over a year ago.
- Irreverent Fool · v1.2.2
I LOVE Suburbia and I do like this app, but I feel it needs a few additions to really shine. First, it needs to have a way to reset the view when you zoom in. I have had to stop multiple games when I accidentally zoomed in too far and couldn't reset the view. Next, it needs to have the Inc expansion added and the 5 Star as well. I love playing those with the real game and I miss them with the app. Third, the AI players are too easy to beat. I haven't lost a game yet. Can't wait for the next round of updates!
- Sarita1119 · v1.2.2
Much more enjoyable than the table top version, much faster without keeping track of everyone's point changes. Love the fun one player campaign and that there are npcs that can be added to multiplayer pass n play.
- RJF0903 · v1.2.2
Especially in the multiplayer department!! Game plays oddly when playing against people online, and it doesn't always update when it is your turn. Additionally, I had to replay my turn frequently before it updated and switched turns to other person. I'd play my turn, and an hour later, I'd have to play the same turn. Frustrating whence game progresses so slowly because of that. It would take weeks to complete a game multiplayer. Interesting single player campaign, however, so I appreciate the option of playing alone.
- Vellybelly · v1.2.2
I agree with most of the review by LetsGetTrivial. Great game. If you like city building + strategy (such as Settlers of Catan, SimCity, etc) you’ll likely lose time to this game. The tutorial is vastly incomplete for players. Calculating tile impact once a handful of tiles have been played will be extremely confusing to most players - Especially those who come to this game having never played the board game. The developer needs to step-by-step explain tile stats in different situations. In addition, the written instructions need a visual overhaul and miss important point in tile tabulation. Hoping for a product update so i can better enjoy this game!
- JeffNYC101 · v1.2
I want to like this iOS version of the board game Suburbia, but it just dumps you into the game without showing you the tutorial, and since the many options and controls are unintuitive, you stumble around and are tempted to just quit. Then, if you are on the single-player campaign and need to leave the game or turn the iPad off, well, you just lost your game progress. Not a good implementation.
- danbc · v1.2
Suburbia is a beautifully designed and well-balanced game. Think of it as a more strategic version of Sim City. Every turn gives you meaningful options, and there are different approaches you can take to accomplish goals. This is also a very well done App adaptation of the board game. I particularly like the solo campaign. There are a series of scenarios that you play through. It’s not simply a matter of random goals. Each one feels unique and well thought out. Lots of re-playability. Even playing the same scenario over and over again feels fresh, as the sequence of tiles can change the course of development quite a bit. Note to the devs: Awesome job! However, I think you are charging way too little for this. Please consider selling additional expansions or scenario packs in the future. Also please consider making an iPhone version.
- Thused · v1.1
Great iOS to one of my favorite board games. 5th star will be added once multiplayer is improved. 6th star with suburbia inc. :)
- Z-Man+ · v1.1
We were excited to have this to play online multiplayer. Unfortunately the online play is pretty buggy. First game went fine but after we finished the game it was still on the dashboard and I was flagged as an active player. Logged in and played another round past the end game and the game re-ended. Same issue back at the dashboard. It doesnt seem like there is a reliable way to quit a game in progress and any game you start will hang around forever even if you have finished it (twice)! Additionally my wife lost a couple buildings mid play one game. Plays like a beta version. We are really hoping for one more update to make the game more reliable online.
